The Daily Forty-Niner celebrates Día de Los Muertos

Día de Los Muertos is unique in the way that it celebrates both death and life. Its core message is that death is not the end, but the beginning of another great journey. Originated in Mexico, the holiday is celebrated in the first week of November across Latin America and other parts of the world.

Many families celebrate Día de Los Muertos with colorful altars honoring the family and friends that have passed. “Ofrendas” are offerings laid out on the altars for the dead to stop by and celebrate with their family before they continue their journey in the afterlife. Traditional markers of an ofrenda include the bright orange cempasuchil flower, candles, pictures and the favorite foods or items of passed loved ones.

No matter how you celebrate, Día de Los Muertos is an opportunity for all to keep the memory of their loved ones alive. This year, the Daily Forty-Niner and DÍG en Español created a digital altar where applicants could honor their passed loved ones. El Día de los Muertos es una festividad única que trasciende en el tiempo y el espacio, ya que celebra tanto la vida como la muerte. Su mensaje central es que la muerte no es el final, sino el comienzo de otro gran viaje. Originada en México, la fiesta se celebra el 2 de Noviembre en toda América Latina y otras partes del mundo.

Muchas familias festejan el Día de los Muertos con altares coloridos en honor a los familiares y amigos que han fallecido. Las ofrendas, (regalos para los muertos) se colocan en los altares con la finalidad de guiar el camino de los muertos durante su cruce del umbral espiritual al terrenal para unirse con sus familias y celebrar. Los elementos tradicionales de una ofrenda incluyen la flor de cempasúchil, de color naranja brillante, velas, fotografías y los alimentos u objetos favoritos de los seres queridos que han fallecido.

No importa de qué manera planee su altar, sin duda, el Día de los Muertos es una oportunidad única para que todos mantengan vivo el recuerdo de sus seres queridos. Este año, el Daily Forty-Niner y DÍG EN ESPAÑOL crearon un altar digital donde los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de honrar a sus seres queridos pasados. En nombre del equipo, gracias a todos los que compartieron sus mensajes y fotos con nosotros. Esperamos que este altar haya sido una fuente de consuelo y alegría.
