Spring 2024
NEW BEGINNINGS
Shaping clay, connections and narratives
The art of ceramics has helped young Latinx artists connect to their culture, process their emotions and create visual representations of their experiences. However, they must still balance the complexity of creating art that vastly differs from the Eurocentric art style taught in their classes and reflected in the major museums to make art more accessible and representative of the diversity of CSULB and beyond.

According to the UCLA Hollywood Diversity report, only 46.2% of roles are cast to non-white actors. A November 2023 study from the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism found that across 1,600 different movies released between the years 2007 and 2022, only 5.5% of the over 62,000 speaking roles were given to a Latinx actor.

The mariachi-style music flowing from her violin brings her back to a nostalgic time in her childhood. She knew she wanted to pursue music since she joined a mariachi group in eighth grade, and when her college didn’t have a similar group, she stepped up to keep the tradition alive.
