Latinx Representation at the Academy Awards

The 95th Academy Awards are premiering tonight, and there are Latino artists on the list of nominations this year, bringing Latinx representation to the Oscars. Sofia Carson is set to perform “Applause” from the movie “Tell It Like a Woman”, with Diane Warren at the Oscars. The singer and actress originates from Colombian roots. But there are three nominees to look forward to, including Ana De Armas, Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro.

Ana De Armas is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the movie “Blonde.” It is the first Oscar nomination for the Cuban-born actress. The movie based on the novel “Blonde” by Joyce Carol Oates is a fictional portrayal of the life of Marilyn Monroe. The drama-filled movie contains heavy scenes that De Armas carried with passion and elegance. The film can be watched on Netflix.

Guillermo del Toro is nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film for “Pinocchio.”  It is not the first time Del Toro has been nominated for an Oscar. The Mexican filmmaker has previously had seven Oscar nominations, taking home two wins. Del Toro was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and carries the title of producer and author. The Fantasy/Musical film can be watched on Netflix.

Alfonso Cuarón was nominated for Best Live-Action Short Film as a producer for the short film “Le Pupille”, along with Italian director, Alice Rohrwacher. Cuarón has 11 Oscar nominations and has won four Oscars in his career for the films “Roma” (2019) and “Gravity” (2014). The Mexican filmmaker was born in Mexico, City, Mexico and was first nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for the film “Y Tu Mamá” a film he wrote for his brother.

“Le Pupille” can be watched on Disney+. 

The Academy Awards is set to premiere on Sunday, March 12, on ABC.
