Banda y Reggaeton: Harmony Rising

The 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards began with a tribute to the rich history of Latin music, highlighting the diverse genres that have shaped its evolution. This event highlights the rise of Latin music, which has been dominating the charts and captivating audiences worldwide.

Reggaeton, a genre that originated in Panama, made its way to Puerto Rico in the late 1990s. The genre, characterized by its infectious beats and danceable rhythms, has skyrocketed in popularity globally, breaking language barriers and uniting people through its universal appeal. Research shows that reggaeton has not only dominated Latin charts but has also made a significant impact on the mainstream Billboard charts. As artists like Daddy Yankee, Karol G and Bad Bunny have become popular, they are breaking language barriers and transcending cultural boundaries among young people.

Reggaeton has often faced criticism for its explicit lyrics and themes. However, reggaeton artists have shaped the genre due to these catchy lyrics within rapid beats and attention grabbing music videos. With reggaeton, we can dance together and celebrate the combination of tradition and modernity.

Some college students who grew up listening to reggaeton, believe it will be integrated more in movies and series.

“You might see Fast and Furious movies use more reggaeton music in their score,” business administration major Javier Castrejon said. “People that aren’t Hispanic listen to reggaeton music, and [even] they knew who some reggaeton artists were such as Bad Bunny, Karol G and Rauw. I notice that people that don’t speak Spanish just enjoy the music and the beat.”

Meanwhile, banda, a genre characterized by its use of brass instruments and traditional Mexican folk elements, has also experienced a resurgence in popularity. Originating in the regional music scenes of Mexico, banda has undergone a modern transformation, blending traditional sounds with contemporary influences. Artists like Banda MS, Julion Alavarez and Grupo Frontera have dominated this genre into the mainstream, earning recognition and chart-topping success.

“It has grown tremendously and has connected with people all over the world because they can relate to the lyrics or the storyline of the music,” said Denise Marquez, an esthetician who graduated from Beyond 21 in 2023. Banda is a reflection of a generation's journey.

The controversies, once seen as obstacles, became stepping stones for our behavior and self-expression. However, banda themes are controversial, often depicting situations like drug trafficking, cartel and money.

“It has evolved tremendously because at the moment it’s mainly about money and having it all but back then it was about love and the hardship of life,” Marquez said.

“[Banda music] typically resonates with the younger audience because they have this image of being outlaws and idolizing criminals. The younger audience are influenced to think that rebelling against society norms tends to be cool,” said Castrejon.

The lyrics and musical instruments of banda echo in the hearts of young people, creating a soundtrack for a generation unafraid to challenge norms and embrace the rich tapestry of their cultural heritage.

The harmony between reggaeton and banda exemplifies the versatility and adaptability of Latin music, ensuring its enduring appeal in the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.

Multiple Latin hits have climbed to the top positions, signaling a shift in the global music landscape. The number one on the Billboard Charts is “Where She Goes” from Bad Bunny, which  peaked at No. 2 on Hot Latin Songs, No. 8 on the Hot 100, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, making Bunny the first soloist with as many as three No. 1s since the survey began in 2020.”

Shakira, a Columbian singer and songwriter, worked with Bizarrap creating the song “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” According to the Billboard Charts, the unapologetic banger crashed the top 10 of the Hot 100, and also hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, Shakira’s 12th No. 1 on the listing and first since 2016. Listed at number nine, Grupo Frontera x Bad Bunny, “unx100to,” a heartbreak song proved to be a memorable fusion of genres, and peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on Hot Latin Songs. This demonstrates the versatility and adaptability of Latin music, ensuring its enduring appeal in the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards have not only celebrated the achievements of Latin music but also served as a testament to the genre's ability to shape the global musical landscape. The rise of reggaeton and Banda serves as a reminder that music, at its core, is a universal language that transcends borders and connects with people from all over the world.
